Breeders' Cup Classic 2018 Win & You're In Final Update

By Evan Chronis October 02, 2018

The Breeders' Cup Classic 2018 field is becoming clearer thanks to the Win & You're In series! This series consists of races from around the world and presents the rare opportunity for a horse to punch its ticket to the Breeders' Cup World Championships® with an automatic and free entry. With all seven races to determine free spots in the Classic now concluded, let's take a look at the two horses that claimed the final spots (kind of).

Breeders' Cup 2018

Who's in so far for the Breeders' Cup Classic 2018:

Accelerate Wins, Again!

Just because a spot is open doesn't mean it has to be taken.

Accelerate, who already earned a free entry into the Breeders' Cup Classic with a victory at the TVG Pacific Classic in August, spoiled the chance for another horse to gain a free ride by winning the Awesome Again Stakes on September 29.

Instead of the race determining another competition in the field at Churchill Downs® in November, it further pushed the narrative, and reality, that Accelerate is the steed to beat at the Breeders' Cup 2018.

Accelerate won the $300,000 pot at Santa Anita Park after getting off to a shaky start out of the gate. The five-year old took the first turn on the course way too wide, pushing him behind the pack at the go. He then got into fourth place on the backstretch, only to advance into a three-horse race down the stretch. Accelerate did just as his name suggests, beating out the competition by 2 1/4-lengths.

The victory was Accelerate's fourth grade 1 win this season, and fifth victory in his last six races.

Discreet Lover Pulls the Upset

If Accelerate is the favorite, then Discreet Lover has become the lovable underdog heading into the Breeders' Cup Classic.

A 45-1 longshot. That's what Discreet Lover walked into Belmont Park on September 29 as, but he left the confines as the newest champion of the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup, which is topped off with a free entry into the Classic in November.

Discreet Lover pulled it out against some of the biggest names in the sport, passing by Diversify, Mendelssohn and Thunder Snow en route to the finish line.

Discreet Lover came into the race winless in his last six starts and having only won six races in 41 total starts. It cannot be stressed enough how unlikely it was for Discreet Lover and jockey Uriah St. Lewis to pull out the victory. However, St. Lewis said after the victory that he doesn't know if Discreet Lover will race at the Breeders' Cup, but the free entry may be able to sway him.
