Breeders' Cup Challenge Win & You're In Series 2019

By Evan Chronis | January 08, 2019

The Breeders' Cup World Championships® is more than just a weekend at the beginning of November, it's a global, year-long competition thanks to the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win & You're In™. This worldwide series takes horses from around the world and gives them a chance to earn a spot at Santa Anita Park for the Breeders' Cup® 2019. The rules are simple — win the race, and you receive a starting spot in your qualified race with your fees paid.

This series will be an expanded version of what we did in 2018. Instead of just keeping track of the winners of the Breeders' Cup Classic qualifiers, we will continually update you on the horses that have qualified for all of the races taking place during Breeders' Cup 2019 weekend at Santa Anita Park.

So strap in and get ready for a ride, because we've got 10 months of qualifying races to look forward to.

Breeders Cup Win and You're In

Cartier Paddock Stakes

Date: January 5

Division: Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf

Track: Kenilworth Racecourse in South Africa

So nice she did it twice.

For the second consecutive year, five-year-old filly Oh Susanna came out as the victor in the Cartier Paddock Stakes. The victory further cements Oh Susanna as the top filly in her home country of South Africa — she was named South Africa's Horse of the Year in 2018.

If the running of the 2019 Paddock Stakes felt like deja vu, it's because it was. A year ago, Oh Susanna broke well early and held off the competition en route to a first place finish, with Lady in Black coming in second. On Saturday, Oh Susanna jumped out early once again and squashed another come from behind effort by the ambitious Lady in Black. New year, same result.

Oh Susanna was jockeyed in the 1 1/8 mile race by Richard Fourie, and was trained by Justin Snaith. With Fourie in the saddle, Oh Susanna earned a free starting position in the $2 million Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf at Breeders' Cup weekend.

L'Ormarins Queen's Plate

Date: January 5

Division: Mile

Track: Kenilworth Racecourse in South Africa

With a four-peat on the line, all eyes were on Legal Eagle in the L'Ormarins Queen's Plate at Kenilworth. The 8-year-old gelding entered the fray on Saturday looking to win this race for the fourth consecutive year, which would tie the competition's record.

But all great streaks eventually end, and the 2019 edition of L'Ormarins Queen's Plate was the conclusion of Legal Eagles immaculate run.

Instead, it was Do It Again, jockeyed once again by Fourie and trained by Snaith, that came out the victor in the second Breeders' Cup Challenge race of the day. With most of the attention pointed towards Legal Eagle, the late triumph of Do It Again was almost missed in the one-mile race. While Legal Eagle was sitting in the middle of the pack near the final stretch, it was Do It Again who made a charge in the final 100 meters to usurp the lead from Soqrat, beating him by a neck.

The win gives Do It Again a free starting position in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile
