Bing Crosby
5 Facts about Del Mar Thoroughbred Club
- Del Mar Thoroughbred Club first opened in 1937. Famous singer and actor Bing Crosby was in attendance to welcome fans to the track.
- From 1942-1944, the track was closed to racing and was used as training grounds for Marines and as a bomb manufacturing site for World War II.
- On September 1, 1955, Cipria of Argentina won a race that paid out $263.40 on a $2 Bet. This Del Mar record still stands today.
- In 2007, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club installed a synthetic surface but reverted to dirt by 2014.
- Del Mar Thoroughbred Club hosted its first Breeders’ Cup World Championships on November 3 and 4, 2017. Gun Runner won the Longines Classic that year.
