Who is the Winningest Trainer in Breeders' Cup Classic History?

By Evan Chronis | October 14, 2019

A horse and trainer relationship is something that takes years to build and refine.

But each one of these relationships in thoroughbred racing leads to one goal — to win.

And there is no accomplishment in the sport greater than taking home the Breeders' Cup ® Classic, the annual race to determine the top 3-years-old or older horse in the world.

Did You Know?

  • Bob Baffert's American Pharoah was the first and only horse to complete the Grand Slam of Thoroughbred racing, winning the Triple Crown and the 2015 Breeders' Cup Classic.
  • Charlie Whittingham has led a horse to victory in the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic twice in his career. He first did it with Ferdinand, who won the 1986 Kentucky Derby and 1987 Breeders' Cup Classic. Then in 1989, Whittingham accomplished the feat within the same year, helping Sunday Silence earn victory in the 1989 Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic.
  • Jay M Robbins most famously trained Tiznow, the only horse to win the Breeders' Cup Classic two times.
  • William I. Mott-trained Cigar won all ten races it entered in 1995, earning the horse the 1995 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year.
