Meet Laffit Pincay Jr. at the 2019 Breeders' Cup

By Evan Chronis | August 02, 2019

We are excited to announce that legendary jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. will be the special guest of Breeders' Cup Experiences at the 2019 Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Want to meet one of racing's most prolific jockeys and the winner of the 1986 Breeders' Cup Classic?

Laffit Pincay Jr.

Laffit Pincay Jr. Bio

Laffit Pincay Jr. burst onto the thoroughbred horse racing scene in the mid-1960s and remained a force to be reckoned with for the following four decades.

The Panamanian jockey dominated the sport in the 1970s, leading all jockeys in earnings five times (1970-’74 & ’79) and winning the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey four times in the decade (1971, '73, '74, '79).

Pincay Jr.'s place in horse racing lore is partially cemented by his time as one of the jockeys in horse racing's greatest rivalry between Secretariat and Sham in 1973. With Pincay Jr. leading the way, Sham claimed the 1973 Santa Anita Derby and was considered the best horse on the West Coast before heading to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby. In one of the most storied "Run for the Roses" in history, Secretariat bested Sham to start his immortal sprint towards the Triple Crown. Sham and Pincay Jr. challenged Secretariat twice more in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, failing to usurp the legendary steed both times.

While the 1970s was Pincay Jr.'s decade of dominance, he earned the biggest wins of his career in the 1980s. In 1984, Pincay Jr. rode Swale to victory in the 110th running of the Kentucky Derby. Two years later, he won the 1986 Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park atop Skywalker.

Pincay Jr. called it a career in April 2003 with a total of 9,530 victories — the most of any jockey in history at that point. He held the record until 2006 when Russell Baze, the current winningest jockey, surpassed his win total.
